Thoral's Guide to Ventrilo

INSTALLATION

Open your web browser and go to the site http://www.ventrilo.com/download.php.

Scroll down the page and find the Download button under the Clients section of the page for "Windows i386 - 32bit". You won't need a server because you will be connecting to the guild's server.

A window will pop up that asks you if you want to run or save. Select Run.

If a window pops up that tells you the publisher is unknown, just Run again.

The Ventrilo Client Setup window will appear. Click on Next.

Click on "I accept the end user license agreement" and click on Next.

For full name, enter anything you want. You can leave the organization entry blank. If you have the choice between installing for all users or just your account, select either one. Then click on Next.

For the destination folder, just leave the default unless you want to change the path. Then click on Next.

Click on Next again to begin the installation.

A window will pop up telling you the installation is done. Click on Finish.

Now you should have a Ventrilo icon on your Windows desktop. Run Ventrilo.

CONFIGURATION

Open Ventrilo by double-clicking on the desktop icon.

Click on the "->" button to the far right of User Name.

The "Setup User" window, press the New button.

Type in your character's name. The User Name window will disappear and your user name will now appear in the User Name box.

Enter your character's name into the Phonetic box. This will be used when you connect and disconnect to the server to announce that you have connected or disconnected. If you don't like the way the computer says your name, you can play with the phonetic spelling until it sounds right by clicking on the Play button. For example, when I use my character name Thoral, the computer pronounces it wrong. Through experimentation, I found that the best phonetic spelling is Thorl.

You can enter a character description if you like. When you are done, click on OK.

Click on the "->" button to the far right of Server.

The Connection Editor window will appear. Click on the New button.

For server name, type Order of Honor and press OK.

In the Hostname or IP box, type speak.tacticallysound.com

In the port box, type 4185.

Leave Password and Default Channel blank.

Leave the check boxes alone unless you want to change the options. You won't mess anything up by selecting different options for your check boxes.

Press the OK button.

Now the main Ventrilo window will show your user name and your server. Click on the Setup... button.

The Setup window will appear. Check the box that says "Use Push-to-Talk Hotkey".

The Hotkey box a little further down the page will turn white instead of gray. Click in the Hotkey box and it will say MOUSE1. Then press whatever key you want to use to activate the microphone. I use the left Ctrl key. If you use this key, then the Hotkey box will change to LCONTROL when you press it.

Click on the OK button. You can come back to the Setup menu later if you want to tweak some settings on your own, especially the Amplifiers.

Click on Connect. You should hear a tone and a couple of Order of Honor people welcoming you if any are on.

Hold down your hotkey when you want to talk and release it when you are done.
